SMS vs Email Marketing: When to Use Each Channel

Short answer: Use SMS for short, time-sensitive messages that need a quick reply, such as reminders, alerts and limited offers. Use email for detail: newsletters, product education and long nurture sequences. Most businesses get the best results by using both, with clear consent for each channel.

SMS marketing and email marketing do different jobs. A text is short, lands on the phone people carry all day, and invites a reply. An email has room for images, several links and a full story, and it costs very little to send. This guide compares SMS vs email marketing on format, cost, consent rules and deliverability. Then it shows how to run them together.

When does SMS work better than email?

SMS wins when timing matters and the message fits in a sentence or two. People keep their phone close, and a text does not compete with a crowded inbox. Good examples:

  • Appointment reminders the day before, with "Reply C to confirm".
  • Speed-to-lead follow-up a few minutes after someone fills in a form.
  • Order and delivery updates that customers are waiting for.
  • Short offers with a deadline, such as a same-day slot or a weekend sale.
  • Two-way conversations where you want a reply, not a click.

Keep each text short. Name your business, say one thing, and give one action.

When does email work better than SMS?

Email wins when the reader needs detail or wants to read later. It handles layout, images and several links in one message. Use it for:

  • Newsletters and product updates.
  • Guides, case studies and onboarding sequences.
  • Receipts and documents people want to keep.
  • Long nurture flows where you send weekly or monthly.

Email is also the better first touch for cold-ish audiences who have shared an email address but have not agreed to texts.

What does each channel cost?

Email is usually the cheaper channel per message. Most email platforms charge by the number of contacts or monthly sends, so one extra email costs almost nothing.

SMS pricing depends on the route. Usage-based providers charge per segment. For example, Twilio's US list price is $0.0083 per outbound long-code segment, plus carrier fees of about $0.004 per message, as of October 2026. A long text with emoji can use two or three segments, so costs climb with length and volume.

A SIM-based gateway works differently. VoidFix sends texts from real SIMs in your own Android phones for a flat monthly fee, with unlimited SMS on paid plans from $49/mo. You also pay for the SIM plans themselves. See SMS pricing for the plans.

What consent and opt-out rules apply?

The rules are stricter for texts than for email in the US.

  • SMS: marketing texts fall under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). CTIA's principles say businesses should get consent to text, express written consent for marketing texts, and let people revoke consent. Under the FCC rule, replies such as "stop", "end", "cancel" or "unsubscribe" revoke consent. The same rule bars telephone solicitations before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. in the recipient's local time.
  • Email: CAN-SPAM requires accurate sender details and subject lines, a clear ad disclosure, your physical postal address and a working opt-out. You must honour opt-outs within 10 business days.
  • EU recipients: both channels generally need consent that meets GDPR Article 7.

Collect consent for each channel separately and keep a record of when and how you got it. Our SMS compliance guide covers the texting side in more detail.

How does deliverability differ?

Email deliverability is mostly about inbox providers. Google's sender guidelines require bulk senders (5,000 or more messages a day to Gmail) to authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC. They must also offer one-click unsubscribe and keep reported spam below 0.30%.

SMS deliverability is about mobile carriers. They filter texts that look like spam, such as repeated identical messages, link shorteners and sudden volume spikes. If you send from your own SIMs, the carrier can still filter or suspend a line that sends too much or gets complaints. Many consumer SIM plans also limit commercial bulk use. VoidFix includes Number Warmup, Spintax message variations and Number Pool rotation across SIMs to keep each line's volume and content natural.

Are SMS open rates really higher than email?

You will often see claims that almost every text gets opened. We could not find a primary source for those figures, so we do not repeat them. SMS has no reliable open tracking, so measure replies, clicks and opt-outs instead.

Email open rates are easier to find but harder to trust. Mailchimp's benchmarks put the average open rate at 35.63% and click rate at 2.62% across its users (data last updated December 2023). Privacy features in some mail apps register opens automatically, so treat open rates as a rough signal and judge email on clicks and sales.

How do you use SMS and email together?

The two channels work best as a sequence. A few patterns that work well in a CRM such as GoHighLevel:

  1. New lead: text within minutes to start a conversation, then email the brochure or pricing.
  2. Booked appointment: email the confirmation with address and details, then text a reminder the day before.
  3. Abandoned cart: email first with product images, then text one reminder if the customer opted in to texts.
  4. Event or webinar: email the invite and agenda, then text a "starting in 15 minutes" link.

Set the rules in one workflow so the same person does not get a text and an email saying the same thing at the same time. For more ideas, read our SMS marketing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is SMS marketing better than email marketing?

Neither is better for every job. SMS suits short, urgent messages and replies. Email suits detailed content and long sequences. Most businesses use both.

Do I need separate consent for SMS and email?

Yes, treat them separately. In the US, marketing texts need express written consent under CTIA guidance and the TCPA, while commercial email follows CAN-SPAM. Record when and how each person opted in.

Which channel is cheaper?

Email usually costs less per message. SMS on usage-based providers is charged per segment plus carrier fees. A flat-fee SIM gateway such as VoidFix removes per-message charges, but you still pay for your SIM plans.

How long can a marketing text be?

A single text holds 160 GSM-7 characters, or 70 if it contains emoji or other special characters. Longer messages are split into segments.

Conclusion

SMS vs email marketing is not an either-or choice. Text when timing matters and you want a reply. Email when the reader needs detail. Get consent for each channel, keep messages relevant, and measure the actions that matter: replies, clicks and sales.
